The “Strada Regina” road runs along the west bank of the river Lario and is renowned for the villas and parks alongside it and for the panoramic views it offers to the road users.

This arterial road, known as the “Tremezzina Bypass” of the state highway SS340, runs through a renowned tourist area on the lake of Como, and plays a major role in international road links towards Switzerland and national ones towards Valtellina and Val Chiavenna.

The project will create a bypass to the existing road, which passes through the urban areas of Colonno, Sala Comacina, Tremezzina (ex Ossuccio, Lenno, Mezzegra, Tremezzo) and Griante.

The work will resolve all the issues existing at present on the ComoMenaggio axis, including:

  • protracted journey times on the road links towards Switzerland (Maloja – Saint Moritz), Valtellina and Val Chiavenna due to passing through the aforementioned urban areas;
  • low level of safety for pedestrians and two-wheeled vehicles in the urban areas;
  • environmental degradation of the town centres travelled through (acoustic and atmospheric pollution, as well as triggering phenomena of vibration);
  • impact of vehicular traffic on the quality of life of the residents and the tourism exploitation of the lakeside;
  • precarious stability of some of the roadside structures, which are continuously stressed by loads deriving from through traffic and subjected to phenomena of subsidence, especially in the town of Tremezzina.

The road covers a stretch of around 9,550 m in total length, starting from the Como end near the cemetery of Colonno to the Menaggio end in the municipal area of Griante, district of ‘Cà Bianca’.

The planned carriageway is C2, with 3.5 m wide lanes and 1.25 m wide pavements, giving an overall carriageway width of 9.5 m
