The “Strada Regina” winds along the western bank of the Lario river, renowned for the villas and parks that flank it and for the panoramic views it offers to those who travel along it.
This artery, known as the "Variante alla Tremezzina" of the SS 340, develops in a renowned tourist area of Lake Como, and plays a primary role for international connections towards Switzerland and national connections towards Valtellina and Val Chiavenna.
The project will create a variant route to the current road that crosses the towns of Colonno, Sala Comacina, Tremezzina (formerly Ossuccio, Lenno, Mezzegra, Tremezzo), Griante.
The work resolves all the problems currently present on the Como-Menaggio axis characterized by:
long travel times for connections to Switzerland (Maloja – Saint Moritz), Valtellina and Val Chiavenna due to crossing the population centers mentioned above;
low level of safety for pedestrians and two-wheeled vehicles in built-up areas;
impact of vehicular traffic on the quality of life of residents and on the tourist use of the lakeside area;
precarious stability of some road structures continually stressed by loads linked to transit and subjected to subsidence phenomena, in particular in the municipality of Tremezzina.
The road route has a total length of approximately 9.550 m, with a connection on the Como side, near the Colonno cemetery and an exit on the Menaggio side in the Municipality of Griante, in the “Cà Bianca” area.
The planned roadway is C2 with 3.50 m lanes and 1.25 m shoulders, for a total roadway width of 9,50 m.
